Destruction in Gaza nears WWII levels, says Catholic aid official

July 29, 2014

An official of Caritas Jerusalem, the Catholic charitable agency, has compared destruction wrought by an Israeli offensive in Gaza to the devastation of World War II.

Father Raed Abusahliah said that thousands of homes have been damaged, and the two small Christian churches in Gaza-- one Catholic, one Orthodox-- are now hosting more than 3,000 displaced people. He emphasized that civilians are bearing the brunt of the damage, estimating that 80% of the casualties have been non-combatants.
