Those who are seizing temples are warring against the Church of Christ, a priest in Kiev says

Kiev, October 10, 2014

“The seizure of Orthodox churches, temporarily halted late in 1990s, has started again,” wrote Archimandrite Alipy (Svetlichny), Rector of the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul in the Nyvky neighborhood of Kiev on his “Facebook” page, reports Interfax-Religion. “What does it mean? Beyond a doubt it means that civilized laws are not working in the country, that the state system and the people who became a part of it have no real influence on the country, and that the executive authority is in crisis. Jungle law has set in, and so if you do not help yourself, no one else will”.

“The opinion that, ‘if the Ukrainian Orthodox Church had become autocephalous no one would have touched It’, is completely wrong,” Father Alipy writes. “The point is that today churches are being seized by vandals for “the Kyiv Patriarchate.” If the situation takes a favorable turn, they will be seized by Uniates, then by sectarians (today we see that various kinds of sectarians are very bloodthirsty and aggressive, with their pastor Turchinov at the head), and next it will be the turn of pagans and other evil scum. This is the natural jungle law, by which the Ukraine is living today.

“Each time the supporters of transfer (to “the Kyiv Patriarchate”) will have to change their orientation in order to keep churches. That is why I say: neither autocephaly nor union will help. They want the Church dead! The very Church of Christ”.

Since Mr. Poroshenko is so very enamored with the US, he should also realize there are Russian Orthodox churches and monasteries under the Moscow Patriarch as well as others in the US and more Russian orthodox churches are opening as one did just in the last week or so. Is the Ukraine confused about what it means to have a western democracy? If he/they (in the Ukraine) are trying to go totally separatist, he should forget about the EU and the US as well. Has Mr. Poroshenko considered how the "other" predominantly orthodox countries are doing in the EU. The US and EU do not care about either the uniat issue or the autocephalous issue. It is good that the orthodox churches under the Moscow Patriarch remain so for the sake of the people until the country is stabilized in its new identity. An autocephalous church would seemingly be better off to develop separately rather than taking over what is not meant to autonomize in that fashion. Aren't the Ukranians are in argument with Constantinople and not Moscow? Attitudes in other places changed after Patriarch Alexei passed away. What is different now? I hope the priests and the people remain safe.
