English Edition[Orthodoxy Around the World] What is the value we give to our faith if we fall and grow tired and weak? The more people hate us for the right reasons the better for us, for we are learning to be like Christ. If we really value the truth of holy Orthodoxy we must be willing to bear whatever comes across our path, like a good and faithful soldier of the Lord Jesus Christ. [News] Head of an Eastern church that traces its founding to Saints Paul and Peter at the dawn of Christianity, Patriarch John is in Boston this week to preside at a convention of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. He arrives from a Middle Eastern nation beset by a civil war that has killed more than a quarter-million people and displaced millions more. Syria's Christians have been targeted in the wave of killings, beheadings and kidnappings by Islamist extremists of ISIS. [News] Magdalena Chudzicka, a mother of four, is rolling out her welcome mat. Her family is among dozens in Poland opening their homes to Syrian Christians fleeing war and Islamic State (IS) persecution, part of a ground-breaking drive by the Catholic nation's tiny Protestant community to save lives. [News] Members of the Romanov dynasty intend to address the Moscow City Hall with the request to rename a metro station that currently is named after the Bolshevik who played a key role in the 1918 execution of Tsar Nicolas II and his family. Representatives of the Russian Imperial House say that the renaming could be done on the anniversary of the killing, which happened in the early hours of July 17, 1918. [Orthodoxy Today] Starting tomorrow, Father Matthew and his wife Anna are going to face the biggest challenge of their lives. Anna will be admitted to the hospital for a high-risk, extremely complicated surgery, to give birth to their fourth child, a daughter they will name Irene. Theirs is a clergy family, one that serves a very small mission church. We in the congregation are giving all we can, but it won’t be remotely enough to meet all the medical needs of the Harringtons. Friends of the Harringtons outside our parish have set up a GoFundMe for those who would like to help them. [Church History] Every observer of Church history knows that the Fathers of the Fourth Ecumenical Council, held in Chalcedon in 451, decided "out of reverence for the Lord's Passion and Resurrection" to elevate the city of Jerusalem, which at the time was a bishopric subject to the Patriarchate of Antioch, to the rank of patriarchate. Over the course of time, Antioch gave her some of her bishopric so that she could have a patriarchal existence. We could mention, for example, that Haifa remained a bishopric of Antioch until the 18th century. [News] "I respect and love the authorities. They are God-given. However, God puts authorities [in place] to fulfill God's will. The authorities should perpetuate peace, not conduct wars. Therefore, I love and respect the authorities, but I am asking them to do everything possible to stop the war." [News] On Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th of July, a dual feast awaited the clergy, parishioners, and guests of St. Alexander Nevsky Diocesan Cathedral in Howell, NJ. On July 18, prior to the beginning of the All-Night Vigil, the myrrh-streaming Hawaiian-Iveron Icon of the Mother of God arrived at the cathedral from Jordanville, NY. The clergy came out to greet the Most Holy Theotokos and returned in procession to the cathedral, where the Icon was greeted by His Grace, Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan, who led the All-Night Vigil. His Grace was co-served by cathedral and visiting clergy. Upon completion of Vigil, the clergy and faithful piously venerated the myrrh-streaming Icon; the faithful were anointed with myrrh from the holy Icon, and each also received a piece of cotton soaked in holy myrrh. [News] The Russian Presidential Library has digitalized the materials connected with the history of Valaam and made them accessible to the general public on the website. These form a collection called “The History of the Russian Orthodox Church” which is one of the largest among the 400,000 books in the first national electronic library, reports its official website. [Orthodoxy Around the World] Years later, in 1880, Dostoevsky read newspaper accounts of a Russian priest who was devoting his life to propagating the Russian Orthodox faith in Japan. The priest was briefly back in Russia. Dostoevsky, deeply religious and therefore deeply interested, paid him a visit. The two men found much to talk about, mainly their shared faith in the Christian regeneration of fallen mankind under Russian leadership. Dostoevsky, a journalist as well as a novelist, planned an article—never written due to his sudden death months later—on Nikolai Yaponskii and his missionary work among the Japanese. [News] A large number of private and state-owned companies make efforts to attract their employees to work on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays and that this practice is becoming more and more popular. Thus, people are deprived of their right to recreation and private life, deprived of an opportunity to devote their time to God, to spend time together with their families, to restore their physical and spiritual energy. [Saints. Asceties of Piety. Church Holy Days ] This holy man contributed immensely to the restoration of spirituality and serious monasticism in Ireland in the second half of the eight century. Under his influence the monastic life and asceticism in the country reached a high level such as can only be compared with that of the era of the great founding fathers of Irish monasticism of the sixth century. [Coming to Orthodoxy] I quit the Roerichian sect completely after I saw a Miracle of God. Several years ago, they started broadcasting the Descent of the Holy Fire live from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. When I first saw this miracle with my own eyes, I suddenly realized that this was the true faith in the living God, who is close to each of us faithful, rather than somewhere in a mysterious Shambhala that nobody ever saw. I understood that that was where Christ was.
