Questions surrounding the canonization of New Martyrs to be discussed at Nativity Readings

Moscow, January 24, 2012

On January 24, 2012, at the twentieth International Nativity Readings in the Christ the Savior Cathedral, a conference will be held entitled, “The canonization and veneration of saints”. Bishop Pankraty of Troitsky, the head of the Synodal commission for the canonization of saints, will preside at the conference.

Issues relevant to the canonization of the new martyrs and confessor of Russia will be discussed at the conference, and Abbot Damascene (Orlovsky), secretary for the Synodal commission for the canonization of saints, will present a report on the theme, “The complexity of studying judicial investigations with the aim of including the names of clergy or laity who suffered [under the Communist yoke] into the Synaxis of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia”, the Synodal information department reports.

Information on the life of Holy Hierarch Macarius of Moscow and the Altai will be presented by Archpriest Maxim Maximov, member of the Synodal commission for the canonization of saints, in his report, “St. Macarius (Nevsky) of Moscow and the Altai (1835–1926) as a Confessor”.

Synodal commission for the canonization of saints member Archpriest Oleg Mitrov will present a report on the theme, “Why Tsar Ivan the Terrible will not be canonized”.

Monk Platon (Rozhkov) of Optina Monastery will give a report on “Collaborationism and Glorification of Saints”, in which he will discuss complex problems connected with research on clergymen who were located in occupied territories during World War II.
