The Theological Writings of Archbishop John and the Question of "Western Influence" in Orthodox Theology

Hieromonk Seraphim (Rose)

The chief characteristic we can point out in St. John's theological writings is freedom. He is entirely immersed in the Orthodox Tradition, and he is himself a source of true Orthodox theology. He has no kind of foreign influences or any overemphasis on one part of Tradition because of some controversy. This makes him especially valuable as an authority on something which is very much discussed today in the English language: the so-called Western influence on Orthodox theology in the last seven hundred years.

Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi: Biography and Remembrances

+ July 1, 2009

Elder Joseph continued the spiritual work which he received from his Elder, and lived as a hesychast till the end of his life. He sought obscurity. He did not seek worldly praise or glory. He endured humbly, meekly and without grumbling all scorn, contempt, disgrace, criticism and slander. He had “compassionate pity” and his heart received and forgave all, because he gave room within himself for Christ.

Fr. Alexey Young

"St. Theophan the Recluse teaches that a highly active imagination can bring psychological abnormalities, but the spiritually alert have almost no imagination because they are experiencing the reality of God. Thus the saints appear emotionless in icons. They can look at us directly because they can look at sin without judging."

Dmitry Lapa

Although St. Herveus (Herve) who lived in the sixth century is still venerated all over Brittany, very little genuine information on him survives. The first detailed Life of this unique holy ascetic was written only in the late Middle Ages. However, besides these late sources, numerous Breton traditions and pieces of folklore testify to St. Herveus and his veneration in Brittany throughout many centuries.
