The New Israel, New Jerusalem

Fr. John Whiteford

Is the Church the new Israel? This idea has been disparaged as "Replacement Theology." And how are we to understand the the term "New Jerusalem"? Is it Heaven? The Church? A literal city? All three? Fr. John Whiteford looks at the Scripture and patristic writings on the New Jerusalem.

Elder Philotheos Zervakos

The blessed Elder Philotheos was born in 1884 in a small village of the Pelopenese, and was given the name Constantine at holy baptism. From childhood he demonstrated an exceptional love for God, running to church at the first sound of the bells. His delight in reading the Lives of saints developed into a longing for monastic life. The demons evidently saw in the youth a potentially powerful antagonist, and from the outset tried to dissuade him from taking this path.

St. Thomas: The Anti-Pascha

Fr. Ted Bobosh

The first Sunday after Pascha is dedicated to the memory of the Apostle Thomas and his particular reaction to the Gospel of the resurrection of Christ. It is a continuation of the Gospel lesson which was read at the Vespers of Pascha Sunday: John 20:19-31. The Gospel lesson for this Sunday is simply continuing a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ by dealing with the very real reactions of Christ’s own disciples to the Good News.

A discourse on the Mystery of Chrismation

Archpriest Artemy Vladimirov

By virtue of Chrismation the Holy Spirit guides us into all truth. He recalls for us the commandments, making our conscience very sensitive and vigilant. The grace of the Holy Spirit gives to man strength to contend with sin and not capitulate to the mercy of the conqueror, and not to yield to the evil that dominates in the world. The Mystery of Chrismation makes man a winged creature, born in Baptism not to crawl, but to fly.
