A short while ago, the well-known figure Papa-Stratis departed this life. He was the priest at the church of Saint George in Kalloni, Lesvos, and lost his battle against cancer at the age of 57. His efforts were so great that the United Nations High Commission for Refugees called him ’the Good Samaritan’ and the New York Times mentioned him and his work.

He was a zealous ascetic in his labors: he cut timber in the forest, chopped firewood and tilled the soil, fulfilling the words of Holy Scripture, “If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat” (2 Thess. 3: 10).
