The new routes were designated in response to President Dimitry Medvedev’s initiative to increase transportation access to distant regions of Russia. The flights will be operated by the privately owned “Avia Management Group”, which runs under the brand name “Dexter.” The airplane that will fly to this archipelago in the White Sea is a Pilatus PC-12.
The Solovki Islands are home to one of the most important religious and cultural monuments of Russia, the Solovki Monastery, and the flights will make that monastery more accessible to pilgrims and visitors during the winter months, when sea transportation is not possible due to the far northern climate. The Kremlin’s press service notes that the islands are also part of a national park, with over a thousand cultural sites.
Also at President Medvedev’s behest, the village on the main island has also been given 21.2 million rubles (672,612 UDS) from the presidential reserve fund for renovation of the elementary school, nursery school, and hospital. Books were also sent to the school library.
