Montenegrin PM calls for united Orthodox Church

Podgorica, Montenegro, January 1, 2012

Montenegro’s Prime Minister Igor Lukšić has stated that he is in favor of a united Orthodox community in Montenegro, regardless of ethnicity.

He told Podgorica-based daily Dan that as a prime minister he would be “much more satisfied if the Orthodox community in Montenegro was gathered around one center”, adding that he personally would like to see the Orthodox communities united regardless of ethnicity.

The prime minister stressed he would encourage dialogue in that sense and expressed readiness to take part in it.

Lukšić said that the new systematization in the Human Rights Ministry envisaged a sector for cooperation with the religious communities.

He said that he felt a “high level of respect” for the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral and stressed that he “wants to build the same relations with other religious organizations”.
