An unknown gunman fired upon Archimandrite Ioakim (Vasilaku), a representative of the Alexandria Orthodox Church as he stood in the yard of the St. George Church in Tripoli.

The shots were fired from a nearby building, the ecclesiastical research center Orthodox Encyclopedia reported on its website on Saturday.

Father Ioakim was not hurt.

The St. George Church flock consists of Greeks and citizens of the countries of the former Soviet Union who work in Libya.

The embassies of Greece and Cyprus have issued a protest note to the Libyan government. The Greek Embassy has demanded that the church be provided with police security.
