Memorial Service for King Harold Godwinesson and those with him

Culminating the events in honor of the 300th anniversary of Russian Orthodoxy in the British Isles, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill will visit London for the long-awaited consecration of the church of the Dormition in Ennismore Gardens on October 16.

Another significant event is scheduled to take place a few days later. On October 27 a pilgrimage has been organized to the village of Whatlington, near the town of Battle in East Sussex, in honor of the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, in which perished thousands, reports Orthodox England.The pilgrimage will take place at 11 AM at the church of the St. Mary Magdalene, about three miles north of the battlefield. Whatlington was a royal manor in which King Harold stopped to pray on his way to the battle.

The pilgrimage includes a memorial prayer service, a luncheon, and a short talk on the battle and its aftermath, with a meeting of the Guild of St. Eadmund to follow.

St. Botolph has been venerated in many countries outside Britain—in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, where many churches are dedicated to him. In the 11th century, his veneration reached Kievan Rus’ and more recently it reached North America. In England and the whole of Western Europe St. Botolph is mainly venerated as patron-saint of travellers, as the saint travelled much himself. Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom) of Sourozh passed away exactly seven years ago August 4, 2003. He founded a unique Russian Orthodox diocese in Great Britain and united not only Russian natives, but thousands of English believers. Even Prince Charles came to his church services. The number of parishioners is still growing as new Russian immigrants are joining them.
