The world court of Jerusalem overthrew the accusation of assault served on a monk of the Greek Orthodox Church, who punched a yeshiva student in the face after the latter spat in his direction as he passed by. As the Israeli news agency NewsRu.il reports, the incident took place in the Old city of Jerusalem.
Judge Dov Polok explained his decision, saying that the government has long closed its eyes on the ultra-orthodox Jews’ custom of spitting at Christian priests when meeting them on the street.
Polok emphasized that at stake here is the image of the country’s entire population, adding that we must not stand for insults aimed at clergy of another religion just because they belong to that religion, just as we must not stand for insults aimed at a Jew just because he is a Jew.”
