The members of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Moldova in a meeting with government officials

Chisinau, April 11, 2012

On 9th April morning the meeting of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Moldova was held in the Metropolitan. The discussion of the Synod members was focused on the anti-discrimination draft law that is to be proposed to the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova for approval.

The Orthodox Church of Moldova sticks firm to its position that the notion of "sexual orientation" is the first step towards the recognition and legalization of sexual minorities. Reference was made to the legislations of other states and non-acceptance of this blatant sin according to the Christian moral law.

The arch-pastors demanded meetings with the state officials. Thus, they were invited to the Parliament Headquarters, where they had a meeting with the Parliament Speaker, Mr. Marian Lupu, and then met Prime Minister, Mr. Vlad Filat.

The Hierarchs expressed their concern regarding the stipulations in the draft law, coming up with arguments and explanations of the dangers that the legalization of the right of sexual minorities draws behind.

The officials promised that if this law would be promoted for approval, work meetings will be held with all relevant structures, including the representatives of religious confessions, and recognized that the existing variant of the bill would lead to unrest and provocations in the society.
