Metropolitan Savas, Pittsburgh's Greek Orthodox leader, receives honorary doctorate from Colby College

Pittsburgh, May 31, 2013

Metropolitan Savas of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Pittsburgh has received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Colby College in Maine.

The native of Gary, Ind., earned a bachelor of arts degree there in 1979, before embarking on a spiritual quest that led him to the monastery and then to the hierarchy of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. He is known for his advocacy of and presence on social media.

"At every phase of your life in the church, you have been in the vanguard," Colby president William D. Adams said at the presentation on Sunday. "As metropolitan you engage with contemporary society and its cultural realities from the Orthodox Christian perspective, and you do that on Facebook as well as from pulpits. You illuminate the presence of the sacred in everyday life and call on all of us to remember and to act on our obligations to each other."
