The Grand Mufti of Syria Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun has expressed his serious concern over the possibility of the destabilization in Syria spreading to Russia.
"Beyond a doubt, it can be stated that if Syria falls, so will Russia. Those who have come to Syria from Tajikistan and Kirghizia [to fight against the Syrian government] will then return to their homelands. Their purpose is to destroy Christians not only in Syria. Their purpose is to destroy all who are not with the west, since their activity is coordinated from London and New York," said the Mufti in his interview with Interfax-Religion.
According to him, the west has begun to provide the extremists with weapons, firstly an informational weapon: the news outlet Al Jazeera, has begun broadcasting in four languages over Russia: in Tatar, Russian, Chechen and Turkish.
"This is being done to stir up an inter-societal war in Russia. Their main ideologies will be the following: Russia has for so many years oppressed Muslims; occupied their lands, and now it is necessary to take vengeance on Russia and to make it pay for all this as for holocaust. They will suggest to Russian society that there is now neo-Stalinism in Russia," noted the agency's spokesman.
The Grand Mufti has suggested that a conference be held in Moscow where participants would openly oppose wahhabism.
"Patriarch Kirill and president Putin must convene this conference in Moscow as soon as possible. I will come and relate what is happening in Syria, what extremists have done there. It is necessary to make every effort to keep Russia and its neighbors away from this evil," said A. B. Hassoun.
"I am ready to travel over 15 regions, to work seven
days a week and 24 hours a day in order to speak with
every Imam and to warn each of them of the threat that is
waiting for Russia because of the events in Syria. I will
also be happy to meet with Orthodox clergy in order to
speak to them, and to find a way to prevent the evil which
is currently threatening Russia," said the
Mufti.
