The polygamist Colliers, who first gained attention for the “polyamorous” movement when they appeared on a January 2015 episode of the TLC show “Sister Wives,” are seeking their own “equality” and legal recognition. Nathan Collier is legally married to Vicki Collier and is now pursuing an additional marriage to Christine.
On Tuesday Nathan and Christine paid a visit to the Yellowstone County Courthouse to find out if they could obtain a marriage license under the Marriage Equality Act, but as polygamy is categorized as a misdemeanor under Montana state law they were refused. The Colliers feel that their situation ought to be recognized as it already exists in reality, so they argue. On the marriage license application in the box for the dissolution date of a previous marriage they wrote “not applicable.”
Although initially denied, the couple were later referred to the Montana Attorney General’s office. When asked for comment, the Attorney General's office referred MTN News to two sections of Montana law stating that polygamy is illegal.
It remains unclear if the application was officially denied. If accepted, it would be the first polygamous marriage license issued in the nation.
