July 9, 2010

The mayor of Madrid signed the document on Friday giving the local Moscow Patriarchate Parish use of a parcel of land for the construction of a church, reports the rector of the Russian Parish dedicated to the Nativity of Christ in the Spanish capital, Priest Andrei Kordochkin.

As he related, the parcel, located in a prestigious area in the north of town, covers an area of 756 sq. ft.

Amongst the members of the council of trustees are the Russian Consul to Spain Alexander Kuznetsov, the head of the House of Romanov Grand Princess Maria Vladimirovna, representatives of the Russian Church, and Russian and Spanish architects.

The city's mayor, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón Jimenez, related his intention in 2009 to give land for the construction of a church when awarding Russian President Dimitry Medvedev a "Golden Key to the City of Madrid." The Russian Consulate in Spain had earlier requested such a parcel.

The Russian parish in Madrid was founded in 2002.
