Georgian, Russian Сhurch leaders to discus Ilia II's possible visit to Abkhazia

Tbilisi, July 25, 2011

Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia plan to meet in Kiev to discuss Ilia II's possible visit to Abkhazia, spokesman for the Georgian Patriarchate Father David Sharashenidze told the media.

The talks will also cover church processes in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, restoration of the jurisdiction of the Georgian Orthodox Church and the administering of the religious mission.

"We remain hopeful that relations with the Russian church will allow us to restore our jurisdiction in Abkhazia. Our jurisdiction practically does not extend to Abkhazia today, even though the Russian Church unequivocally recognizes the unity and integrity of the Georgian Church, including in Abkhazia, which is an integral part of the Georgian Orthodox Church," he said.

Ilia II wants to visit Abkhazia and this will be discussed, too, Father David said.

Ilia II told the press before his departure that he had been invited to Kiev by Patriarch Kirill and Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev and All Ukraine.

Relations between Georgia and Russia will be discussed, as well, he said.
