Monastic prayer rescued shipwreck survivors near the Indian coast

Vyatka (an industrial town in north central European Russia), November 24, 2014

This story was recounted by Mother-Superior of the Convent of the Nativity of Christ in the Vyatka Diocese, Abbess Theodosia (Dyachkova).

“Recently a woman expressed her thanks to me,” relates Abbess Theodosia. “The lady parishioner has told me that not long ago, in October, right before her children went on holiday, she ordered a reading of the Psalter with their names written, so that the convent nuns might pray for her children daily. Her children and grandchildren—four persons in all—were on the very ship that suffered a wreck near the Indian coast but by miracle they survived and were not injured at all. The woman has thus experienced herself the effect of the monastic prayer and the power of perpetual reading of the Psalter.”

On October 28 a tourist vessel was wrecked near the coast of India, the Vyatka Diocese’s website reminds.

Three of the ten residents of Russia who chartered the vessel are dead. Among those shipwrecked but miraculously survived were the adult children and grandchildren (all of them safe and sound!) of the lady parishioner of the Convent of the Nativity of Christ (the town Slobodskoy, the Kirov region) who before the start of her relatives’ holidays had arranged that “the perpetual reading of the Psalter be done for their health.”

The same can be said about reading a prayer: whether recited by memory or read from a book, it would be not prayer itself, but merely a way to begin. Let us Learn to Pray.
