BBC2 released a new travel television series about Greece, which is scheduled to air every Sunday. The series’ host, Simon Reeve will travel across the country in various “exotic” places.

The idea for the television series was formed a long time ago and recently came into focus again, due to the financial and refugee crisis that have plagued the country in recent years. People may always think of Greece as a country full of ancient history and spectacular beaches, however, Simon Reeve seeks to showcase it as a crossroads between the East and the West.

While shooting the series, the host traveled to Mount Athos, Crete, Symi and Athens. “Faith is foremost in Greece. Mount Athos, a mountainous peninsula that juts out into the Aegean Sea in the north, is a great spiritual center and has been the emotional heart of the Greek Orthodox Church since 1054,” he wrote in an article for the Independent. “Men go there to pray, think and connect with their maker. I was left in awe.”

Furthermore, he adds that Crete was a “revelation.” He was particularly impressed by the people’s feisty and passionate character. “They’re heroic and dramatic and very charismatic,” he wrote.

As for his favorite Greek island, Reeve opted for a more unpopular option, the island of Symi, located north of Rhodes. “If I had to live anywhere else aside from Britain, it would be Symi. Current problems aside, they have it pretty good: the way of life, the mentality, the passion, the food … I find it all very appealing,” he said.

“Greece with Simon Reeve” premiered on Sunday, February 7, and will continue to broadcast on a weekly schedule.
