Third forum of Orthodox women takes place at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

Moscow, May 30, 2014

On May 29, 2014, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia the III forum of Orthodox women on the subject, “Increase of the women’s role in spiritual, moral and patriotic education of Russian citizens: the past, the present and the future” took place at the Hall of Church Councils in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

Before the forum’s plenary meeting, a general meeting was held at which changes were made to the composition of the board of directors and the council of the Union of Orthodox Women. President of Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine and Helen Foundation Anastasia Ositis was elected another co-chairperson of the board.

890 people from Moscow and the Moscow region, 32 regions of the Russian Federation, Armenia, Belarus, Belgium, Greece, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Lithuania, Transdniestria, the Ukraine and Uzbekistan took part in the work of the Orthodox women’s forum. The Ukrainian delegation was represented by Orthodox women from Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kiev, Odessa and Kharkiv.

Metropolitan Arseny of Istra, first patriarchal Vicar in Moscow, gave a welcoming speech on behalf of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church. Head of the Russian Church of Old Believers Metropolitan Cornelius addressed the forum participants as well.

20 people, including chairperson of the board of the Foundation of St. Eudokia of Moscow L.S. Akelina; director of studies of the high school in Navahrudak (Belarus) N.G. Martsul; chairman of the Council of Orthodox women of the Ukraine Natalia Vitrenko; doctor of the Друскининкай family clinic (Lithuania) I.L. Sinitsina; vice-rector of the Military Translators/Interpreters’ Institute (the Military University at the Russian Ministry of Defense) Elena Knyazeva; co-chairperson of the “Union of Orthodox women” International public organization N.N. Belogubova; chairwoman of the “Union of Orthodox women of the Ukraine” Ukrainian national public organization (Dnepropetrovsk) O.V. Kovalenko; chairwoman of the State Duma Committee on Family, Women and Children Affairs Elena Mizulina; chairperson of the board of trusties of the “Holiness of motherhood” program Natalia Yakunina; as well as head of the Synodal Department for Relations between the Church and Society Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin took part in the discussion of the subjects: “Russian women-saints as role models”, “The women’s merciful ministry for the benefit of the people and the motherland”, “Unity of family and school in restoration of spiritual and moral ideals of Holy Rus”, “Women and patriotic education of the youth: national security and the future of Russia”.

The work of the Third Forum of Orthodox women was summed up by co-chairperson of the board of the “Union of Orthodox women” International public organization Nina Zhukova. A statement was adopted, based on the forum’s results.

The forum ended with a concert of the choir of Moscow St. Daniel’s Stavropegic Monastery (led by George Safonov) and the Moscow boys’ choir (artistic director and conductor ViktoriaSmirnova).
