The Russians Are Coming? Cypriots Want Russian Military Base

Marius Fotiu, head of the organization, pointed out that Cyprus is the closest EU member-state to Syria so the probability of terrorist attacks in the country is extremely high. Activists asked Anastasiades to “invite units of Russian Aerospace Forces and Navy to Cyprus territory,” according to Izvestia newspaper.

The activists believe that NATO’s attempts to combat terrorism have not yielded any tangible results while Russia time and again has upheld the principles of peacekeeping, justice and freedom in Europe, Izvestia adds.

The human rights center has already started collecting signatures for the initiative, though the probability of establishing a Russian military base in Cyprus, a country that seeks NATO membership, is relatively low.

On September 30, Russian military aircraft began executing precision strikes against ISIL forces in Syria at the behest of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Since the beginning of the airborne campaign Russian aircraft have carried out over 2,000 sorties, destroying about 3,000 ISIL targets and eliminating hundreds of militants.

The warships of Russia's Caspian Flotilla have also launched a series of cruise missile strikes against ISIL assets in Syria.

Actually Cyprus has never applied for NATO membership. As for Russian bases, I think the majority of the people would say yes, but unfortunately the two biggest parties in Cyprus are against. The right wing party DISI is clearly pro-western. The Communist Party AKEL pretends to be pro-Russian but in fact it is pro-English. After the collapse of Communism in Russia, AKEL doesn't see Russian influence in Cyprus favourably because its leadership is anti-Christian. However, they know that the people are pro-Russian so they pretend to be pro-Russian in theory and in practise do nothing! As you understand, this is the worse possible combination because to the mind of the average Cypriot, if AKEL who is "so pro-Russian" can do nothing to promote Cypriot-Russian geopolitical cooperation (defence, energy etc.) even when it was in power (2008-2013) then that means that it is impossible to have closer relations! I think the only hope for close russo-cypriot relations is the party of former Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas. He has repeatedly called for the establishment of russian bases in Cyprus.
